After only three days of working for NASA as an intern, 17-year-old Wolf Cukier discovered something big: he found a new planet.
A student of Scarsdale High School in New York, Cukier was offered a two-month NASA internship in Maryland during the summer of 2019. His job was to study the light of stars that were seen using a NASA satellite, looking for darker moments that could be caused by a planet moving in front of the star.
NASA confirmed the planet, which it called TOI 1338 b. It was the first planet to be discovered by the satellite. It is about 1,300 light-years away and 6.9 times bigger than the Earth.
What makes TOI 1338 b even more special is that it orbits two stars, not just one. One of those stars is 10% larger than our Sun; the other star is only one-third of the Sun’s size.
