With temperatures in summer rising to over 45 degrees Celsius, Qatar has started using air conditioning to cool down outdoor spaces.
The Washington Post reports that the new Al Janoubstadium is one major outdoor space that is being air conditioned. It has been designed so that cool air blows around people’s ankles from under its 40,000 seats. The pitch also has its own air conditioning.
Al Janoubwill be used for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which has already been moved from summer to November, the middle of Qatar’s winter, to avoid the worst of the heat, and to protect the health and safety of players and fans.
Other places in Qatar that are being air conditioned include sidewalks, markets and outdoor malls, so people can walk and shop while staying cool.
