In March 2014, a man in North Carolina was stopped by police for driving drunk. His blood alcohol level was about 2.5 times the legal limit, but he said he had not drunk any alcohol. The police didn’t believe him, but researchers later discovered that the man’s body was brewing beer.
Auto-brewery syndrome is a rare medical condition where fungus in a person’s digestive system makes alcohol from carbohydrates they eat. The process usually occurs in the stomach and the first part of the small intestine, an area where fungus is not normally found.
The man had experienced problems with memory loss, depression and unusual aggression since January 2011, when he had taken antibiotics for three weeks for a thumb injury. He was 46 years old and otherwise healthy at the time.
