Since January 1, 2019, employers in Ontario, Canada, were once again allowed to ask for a note from a doctor when an employee took a sick day. The government says the change will help employers make sure employees don’t stay home when they should be at work.

The change came a year after Ontario’s last government said employers were not allowed to ask for sick notes. However, Dr. Gigi Osler, former president of the Canadian Medical Association, said this change could create “unnecessary public health risks.”
