Every weekend in Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik, parents take a two-hour walk around their neighborhoods to make sure local teenagers aren’t drinking alcohol and are home before their curfew.
By law, anyone under 12 cannot be out without their parents after 8 pm, and those aged 13 to 16 cannot be out after 10 pm most days, and past midnight during the school holidays.
The parents’ walk and the curfews have been just part of Iceland’s success in reducing teenage drinking. The two-decade-old project also includes promoting more music and sports activities for teenagers.
