NASA will let private companies use the International Space Station (ISS), including visits by private astronauts, starting as early as 2020. Companies will pay NASA about $35,000 per person for each day on the ISS, but will have to buy flights to and from the station from either Boeing or SpaceX, which could cost over $50 million.
NASA spends $3 billion to $4 billion a year to operate the ISS. By giving private companies more access to it, NASA hopes to be able to instead spend that money on sending people to the Moon and Mars. The US plans to stop spending money on the ISS by 2025, and would like private companies to take it over one day.
