When we think of literacy skills, we usually think of reading.
Schools often focus on teaching students to be strong readers with good comprehension skills. But while those skills are important, many experts say writing skills are equally important and are often overlooked.
Compared to reading, writing encourages students to become independent thinkers, says Elyse Eidman-Aadahl, executive director of the National Writing Project.
“Unless we want an education system just focused on making people consumers and not focused on helping them be producers, this [focus] on reading only … is very short-sighted,” she says.
