Over 80% of payments in Japan are made using cash, meaning the country is behind both South Korea and China, where cashless payments have become more common.
This is according to data from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which shows that 19.8% of payments were cashless in 2016. By contrast, in South Korea 96.4% of payments were cashless.
