In South Korea, everyone is 1 year old the day they are born, and on New Year’s Day, everyone in the country gets one year older.
When Lee Dong-kil shared news of his daughter’s birth on New Year’s Eve, his friends congratulated him. “An hour later, when the new year began, they phoned me again to say congratulations for my baby becoming 2 years old,” Lee said. “I thought: ‘Ah, right. She’s now 2 years old, though it’s been only two hours since she was born.'”
