A homeless, 8-year-old refugee has won the New York State chess championship for his age group. Tanitoluwa Adewumi, or Tani for short, only learned to play chess about a year ago, after his family moved from Nigeria to New York City to escape terrorism.


Tani won every game in the tournament, even though he was playing against children from expensive private schools. In his short time playing the game, Tani has already won seven chess trophies. “I want to be the youngest grand master,” he said.
