A record 30 million foreigners visited Japan in 2018, up from just six million in 2011. The number of foreigners working in Japan also doubled over the last five years, leading to a rise in foreign patients for Japan’s health system.


A 2016 study found that almost 98 percent of large hospitals and 85 percent of small hospitals in Japan had seen foreign patients in the previous year. However, many of these hospitals didn’t have interpreters for patients who didn’t speak Japanese.
