When Not to Use Articles

 

Here are more situations in which articles are not used:
1. In general, do not use articles before names of divinities:

– Incorrect: The Hawaiian goddess of fire is named the Pele.
– Correct: The Hawaiian goddess of fire is named Pele.

 

2. Do not use articles before the names of academic (school) subjects

– Incorrect: John is majoring in the Biology.
– Correct: John is majoring in Biology.

 

3. Do not use articles before the names of sports:

– Incorrect: The boxing is a violent sport.
– Correct: Boxing is a violent sport.

 

4. Do not use articles before the names of holidays:

– Incorrect: The Christmas is an important family holiday.
– Correct: Christmas is an important family holiday.

 

5. Do not use articles before abstract nouns:

– Incorrect: The patience is a quality which he greatly admires.
– Correct: Patience is a quality which he greatly admires.

 

Take note: When removing an article at the beginning of a sentence, we also highlight and capitalize the word following it.
