Workers, most of whom struggle to make ends meet month after month, feel a greater financial pinch in May as they have to spend extra cash on several family-oriented occasions. May is known as a family appreciation month in Korea, packed with holidays like Children’s Day, Parents’ Day, Teachers’ Day, and Married Couples’ Day. In recent years, however, more people are starting to perceive May as the month of costly expenses.  On Children’s Day last Saturday, parents posted pictures of their children hugging expensive toys under hashtags like #FearfulChildrensDay #HardDayforAdults #ParentsDead. “My wallet just got raided. Now that they (my children) are bigger, they ask for presents instead of just family time. I wonder how they will manage to repay me on Parent’s Day?” read one public Instagram post by a mother of three surnamed Lee.
